Dr. Dvir Aran is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Biology and the Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion – Israel Institute for Technology. Dr. Aran’s research field is computational biology—as such, he uses data science and AI to advance biological and medical research. Dr Aran develops computational tools and applies them to integrate and analyze big data from multiple sources, including genomic and epigenetic data and electronic medical records. His research aims to advance the understanding of the tumor microenvironment, as well as the immune system, and their relationship with potential treatments. Dr. Aran has gained international recognition for his contributions to the understanding of the tumor microenvironment and other diseases. The tools he developed serve thousands of researchers every year to conduct complicated analysis in an automated, user-friendly manner.

Dr. Aran’s early research focus was on the interplays between DNA methylation and gene expression profiles in health and disease. He then shifted to developing computational and experimental methods for better characterization of the tumor microenvironment and applying those methods to pan-cancer studies. The methods he developed are used by thousands of researchers in academia and industry around the world. Dr. Aran’s current focus is split between computational immunology analyses using single-cell RNA-sequencing data; and applying machine-learning techniques on electronic health records (EHR) to improve patients’ flow and disease outcomes.
